On Saturday 7 July, Jacques Stap will embark on a 65-day motorcycle odyssey around Australia on his BMW in remembrance of his partner Nicole, and to support all Australians affected by breast cancer.
After losing his beloved partner Nicole to breast cancer last year, Jacques is undertaking the motorcycle adventure around Australia that they had hoped to take together.
Jacques will embark on the trip alone, not only to remember his partner but also to raise $25,000 for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).
BCNA works to ensure women diagnosed with breast cancer, and their families, receive the very best information, treatment, care and support possible.
More than 20 stops will be made by Jacques on his Trip Around Australia, both to places he visited with Nicole in the past, and places they had hoped to visit together in the future.
Funds raised by Jacques on his epic journey around Australia will go directly to BCNA to provide information and support to other women and families faced with a diagnosis of breast cancer.
"During these last five years the information, support and assistance from BCNA was enormously helpful and positive, not only to Nicole, but also to our children and me," Jacques said.
"The support and information felt sometimes like a warm blanket wrapped around you, or like a shoulder to lean on."
Jacques will receive plenty of support along the way, linking up with BCNA members and local Ulysses motorcycle clubs for events in key towns around Australia.
Maxine Morand, BCNA CEO and breast cancer survivor, expressed her thanks to Jacques for his generosity.
"By raising funds and awareness for BCNA, Jacques is helping other women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families."
"Jacques has an intimate understanding of the impact that breast cancer can have on individuals and families, and we thank him for inviting us to share this very special and personal journey with him."
The ride will be an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for BCNA but ultimately will be a personal experience for Jacques in memory of Nicole.
"I know there will be mornings where I feel it is too hard to get out of bed and ride another couple of 100kms through dust, rain, cold or heat. But then I remind myself it's not that hard compared to what my partner went through," Jacques said.
"The chemotherapy, radiotherapy, blood transfusions, the pain, the incapacity and then the fear. She took it all in her stride and always reminded us to 'celebrate each day'."
