Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, NSW is one of Australia's greatest open range zoos and home to incredible creatures from all over the world, including rare and endangered animals like the Black Rhinoceros and the Cheetah! Animal Spot

Zebra

The Zebra is found in the treeless grasslands and the savannah woodlands in Africa. They are identifiable by their boldly black and white striped coat.

Zebras live in highly social groups which usually consist of female family groups and one stallion. In the wild their major predators are Lions and Spotted Hyenas whilst African Wild Dogs, Cheetah and Leopards will target the foals in a group.

To protect themselves against land predators, the Zebra will retreat to the open areas with good visibility at night. When a group is feeding or sleeping, one Zebra will keep watch and alert the group if a predator is spotted.

Dr Benn Bryant

I have been a vet for 25 years and in my role I care for all the animals at Taronga Western Plains Zoo as well as Wildlife Hospital cases that come into the Zoo. My job is exciting as I get to work with exotic animals and every day is different. A real highlight from my time at the Zoo would have to be hand raising a White Rhino calf!
