A young Muswellbrook man has died in a single car crash near Muswellbrook.

Emergency services were called to Edderton Road, Jerry Plains, at 8.45pm on Thursday.

Police said initial inquiries show a green Ford Falcon ute was travelling north when it left the road and crashed into a tree.

The driver, a 22-year-old man, suffered severe injuries and died at the sceme.

Police and specialist forensic officers are investigating what caused the crash.
